Richard Carl Johnson

Richard Carl Johnson of Dore Lake, SK was born November 29, 1953 and passed away suddenly on April 30, 2018 when his snowmobile broke through the ice of the lake.  He was 64 years of age. He was predeceased by his parents Carl and Peggy (McAteer) Johnson of Dore Lake, SK. He is survived by his sister, Susan (Richard) Wuorinen of Grande Cache, AB and Dore Lake, SK, his uncle and aunt, Ted and Carol Johnson and their daughters, Shirley Feszyk of Dore Lake, SK and Ida May Ricalton of Leduc, AB along with other numerous cousins. Richard was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces serving in the Transport Division, first being posted to Moose Jaw, SK where he drove military vehicles including semi-trucks and buses. Next, he was posted to Lahr, Germany where he was the personal driver for the Canadian Brigadier General in Europe.  His following tour was with the UN as a peacekeeper to the Middle East. Once back in Canada, he was posted to Winnipeg, MB and then went to Borden, ON as a military driving instructor.  He lived in PEI for a time to aid with the closing down of the air base at Charlottetown. He had the opportunity of showing his parents the sights of the island when they flew out for a visit.  A move to Edmonton, AB was to follow and he was given another peacekeeping tour, this time to Croatia. He returned to Edmonton, AB from which he retired after 25 years of service.

Richard moved back to Dore Lake to keep his mom company after his dad died.  He did commercial fishing with his uncle for a number of years.  He then went on to work as assistant maintenance man for the hamlet.  Since then, he kept busy doing mechanical work on his various vehicles, running his skid steer to make trails and smooth the road, planting fruit trees, cutting firewood and feeding the birds.

He loved the outdoors and life in the wilderness. He was an avid walker on the trails, accompanied by his beloved cats.  An informal outdoor memorial will take place in the summer.
